Related Times Topic: IsraelDozens of young Palestinians had spent the night in the compound, holy to Muslims and Jews, because of rumors that militant Jews planned to take it over during the Purim holiday, which began Sunday. The resulting clashes ended with more than a dozen youths injured, seven men detained and four police officers slightly injured. The site was calm but tense by late afternoon.
The confrontation followed similar disturbances at the Cave of the Patriarchs in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron in recent days involving stone-throwing youths and Israeli security forces. Those troubles began after the Israeli government decided to include the Hebron site along with Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem on a list of national heritage sites scheduled for renovation and upkeep by the state.
All three shrines — the Hebron cave, the Bethlehem tomb and the plaza in Jerusalem known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount — came under Israeli control in the 1967 Middle East war and have been the sites of frequent tension ever since.
Just below the Jerusalem plaza is the Western Wall, a Jewish prayer site that was part of the perimeter of the Jewish temple destroyed by the Romans 2,000 years ago. By mutual agreement between the Israeli government and Palestinian religious authorities, Jews do not pray atop the plaza itself to avoid friction. But some Jews have sought to challenge that ban.
After the police raid, Palestinian leaders in the West Bank accused Israel of increasing tensions and undermining American efforts to restart peace negotiations. But an Israeli police spokesman said that the forces had gone in because the stone throwing was threatening tourists and worshipers.
I would like to publicaly thank Jalayne and Taylor and thier significant others for the great two week vaction Preston and I enjoyed. What a party it was! Watching the Olympics with David and Jalayne, partying with Taylor and the boy with tennis, ping pong, and Wii football. Best Food: The Mandarin in Toronto. Best Desseret: Jalayne's peach cobller. Worst Experience: sitting through a fireside in Toronto. Best moment: Spencer and I taking down Taylor and Hyrum four times at computer football.
First, I didn't mean to refer to Levin as cute - I meant devastatingly masculine and handsome.
Second, our computer is finally working fast enough for me to watch the videos people have been posting. Leah and I both love the fighting leopard video. Leah keeps saying, more, more. I think the leopard wins if the knight runs away.
Just in case you forgot how cute Leah and Levin are here are a few pictures.
Leah's FAVORITE past time! Her favorite is jumping to Levin from the side . . . but she prefers to do it when he looks away. It's a little game they play (does it sound dangerous?)
Her new mosquito net. She and I both hate it. But I guess it's a good thing.
One of the few words Leah knows how to say is pretty. She brings me her head band and I put it on and we say pretty and then she pulls it off and we repeat. We tried it with her being a little babushka and got the same response, pretty followed by immediately ripping it off.
There is now a KFC in Nigeria! The owner is the same guy that does the chains if India. I think that is why you get Basmati rice instead of mashed potatoes and gravy. Inside is really nice, but we weren't allowed to take pictures. The soft serve and fries (which are more like McDonald's than KFC) are delicious! The chicken's not bad either.
I just looked at the picture that Dad posted of us women singing and it looks like I am holding my stomach because I am about to throw up. It wasn't that bad. The retreat wasn't the funnest we have had but it was nice to see everyone. I am glad Lincoln got back from Taylor's safely. Hope all is well with you all. I am going to Lucinda and Justin's on Saturday to tend while they go to Virginia to see about this new job. There is always something exciting happening in this family. We are THRILLED with Allyson's news. Love Mom
We decided to get out of the house yesterday. The kids have been out of school for more than a week because of the snow! I hope the white stuff goes away soon. As ugly as it is, I miss my grass. We drove down south, through Richmond and almost to the North Carolina border. Oliver scouted out a horse that he is thinking about buying, and we also stopped along the way to visit the Petersburg Civil War battlefield. We also stopped at the big Bass Pro Shop, which the kids loved. I think Cabela's was slightly better, but it was still pretty cool.
Something cool happened with Judson in Vladivostok! We have been trying to help him find the baby home where Jared and Joel were, since he had recently been transferred to the same city where it was. Well, after going to 3 different homes, he found it. And the same lady is the director, and she looks exactly the same! He said they were really excited and showed him where we signed in the register when we took the boys from the home the day we adopted them. I guess they were begging for photos. It probably doesn't happen often that anyone returns, or sends someone else, this long after the adoption. Pretty amazing... we never thought we would ever see the place again, and now we sort of have.
For those who do watch the movie, its important to know that despite how unbelievable and hollywoodized the ending seems, its is actually absolutely true to events.
A few more out the back door. The kids have had snow days all week, and we just got word that they have cancelled Thursday and Friday too. Unfortunately that puts them over the number of snow days planned into the schedule, and now they will have to start going to school during some of Spring Break. It's a bummer because Cannon and Amanda will be here then. We have busy time coming up. First we go to Hawaii, then Lorin and Carolyn will stay for a night, immediately followed by Cannon & Amanda. Then come Allyson & Moema. Later is the Bolivia trip, my trip to Fresno, and the East Coast reunion. We have been amusing ourselves during this snowed-in season by contemplating the possible purchase of an Amish house that currently doesn't have electricity or any full bathrooms. I see that Justin has his new camera! Check out the fine resolution of that adorable baby! Here are a few photos of our snow. The first is a picture from our front door. There is usually a driveway, but now there is only a snow bank. Next one is of our deck. Picnic, anyone? Then you see Ryan stuffed into his winterwear.
